The Story Behind Our Sustainability Recognitions: What Lies Beneath
A Way of Life, Rooted in Our DNA
Costa Rica may be a small country, but its commitment to sustainability is enormous. Globally recognized for its vast biodiversity and pioneering environmental policies, this destination has proven that development and conservation can go hand in hand. Over a quarter of the country’s land is protected, and nearly 100% of its electricity comes from renewable sources. But where does tourism fit into this green landscape? In Costa Rica, traveling with environmental awareness is not just a trend—it’s a way of life.
Sustainability is not just a goal; it is a responsibility. At El Silencio Lodge & Spa, we understand that being a company committed to the environment, society, and collaborative economy requires concrete actions and continuous effort. Nestled in the heart of Costa Rica’s cloud forest, we have embraced sustainability as a fundamental pillar of our operation. But what does it truly mean to be a sustainable company?

A Holistic Approach for a Greener Future
Our property spans over 200 hectares of cloud forest, a rare ecosystem that makes up only about 1% to 2.5% of the world’s forests. Did you know that these mist-covered forests play a crucial role in climate regulation and water conservation? This natural sanctuary, once a cattle ranch, has been restored and regenerated, paving the way for incredible biodiversity.
Commitment to the community is also a core part of our philosophy. Approximately 80% of our team members come from nearby towns, and we have actively worked to enhance the quality of local services in a destination with just around 300 residents.
Certifications That Validate Our Commitment
Sustainability is not just about claiming responsibility, it’s about proving it. At El Silencio Lodge & Spa, we have earned certifications that validate our dedication to environmental conservation and social responsibility:
7 Categories of the Blue Flag Ecological Program: This prestigious recognition is granted only to those who meet rigorous environmental standards.
- Sustainable Construction
- Climate Change
- Protected Natural Space
- Micro-basin Conservation
- Sustainable Home
- Sustainable Agriculture
- Sustainable Mobility
Sustainable Tourism Certification (CST): A globally recognized seal endorsed by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, evaluating hotels' environmental and social impact.
Essential Costa Rica: A certification that highlights the country’s commitment to sustainability, excellence, and social responsibility.
Commitment to Child Protection in Tourism: we have adopted the Code of Conduct against the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children and Adolescents (ESCNNA) in the tourism sector. This initiative aims to prevent, detect, and report any form of exploitation, fostering a safe environment for children and adolescents.
Actions That Make a Difference
How do we turn these principles into real action? Discover some of the initiatives that help us leave a positive impact on our surroundings:
- Ongoing Reforestation: We invite our guests to plant trees, helping protect Costa Rica’s forests and water sources.
- Smart Waste Management: From composting to biodiesel production using recycled cooking oil, we minimize our environmental footprint.
- Native Stingless Bee Sanctuary: Have you heard of these local bees? They play a key role in forest regeneration and produce honey with unique medicinal properties.
- Community Support: We collaborate with the local school’s food program, maintain safe road access, and donate supplies to nearby organizations.
- Environmental Education: We organize activities for local children, such as access to microscopes and scientific laboratories.
- Local Consumption: We prioritize products and services from the community to strengthen the local economy and reduce our carbon footprint.
